ABOUT THIRUVANANTHAPURAM |

Located near the Southern
tip of
India, Thiruvananthapuram (also known as Trivandrum) is bound by the Arabian
Sea in the west and Tamil Nadu in the east. Named after Anantha Padmanabha,
or lord Vishnu, the city is home to many ancient temples; but the landmark
is the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple around which the city has been built.
The wooded highlands of the Western Ghats in the eastern and northern
boarders give Thiruvananthapuram some of the most enchanting picnic spots. A
long shoreline with internationally renowned beaches, historic monuments,
backwater stretches and a rich cultural heritage make Thiruvananthapuram a
much sought after destination. Clean and green, The capital of Kerala is one
of the most beautiful cities in the country.

Sight seeing largely includes the
Padmanabha Swamy Temple, many museums, Zoological park, Priyadarsini
planetarium, Kanakakkunnu palace etc. Shankhumugham beach, Akkulam and Veli
tourist villages are a few of the must-see picnic spots. Ponmudi hill
station and Kanayakumari are about two and a half hours drive from the city
in opposite directions. Kovalam, the famous beach is just 20 kms south of
the city and Varkala is 55km towards north.
Kumarokam backwaters, Aleppey, Munnar,
Guruvayoor temple, Thekkady wildlife sanctuary, Palaruvi waterfalls are some
of the tourist destinations easily accessible from Thiruvananthapuram by
road or rail.

The Trivandrum International airport,
located 6 km from the city centre has over 30 air links to major cities in
the country and a few destinations abroad. Trivandrum Central (TVC) railway
station is situated in the heart of the city. There are direct trains from
all the main towns in Kerala and as well as major cities in
India.
Long distance buses operate from
Thampanoor, near railway station to all main towns in Kerala as well as to
many towns in South India. By road, Thiruvananthapuram is near the end of NH
47 and is accessible from anywhere in the country.

Thiruvananthapuram enjoys tropical
climate with average winter temperature (October to January) ranging from 18
to 28oC. The city gets a good monsoon
from June to September and summer temperatures range from 24 to 34oC.
Thiruvananthapuram is the first city
along the path of the
south-west monsoons and gets its first showers in early
June. The city gets heavy rainfall of around 1700 mm per year.
The city also gets rain from the receding north-east monsoons
which hit the city by October. The dry season sets in by
December. December, January and February are the coldest months
while March, April and May are the hottest. |
